The Penitent is the last theatrical text by David Mamet, one of the most important playwrights, directors and all-round intellectuals in contemporary America. The story tells of a doctor facing a media-shaming, following the murder committed by a young patient. As if that weren’t enough, the psychiatrist is involved in a suspect homophobia. In a society that tends to exploit even murder cases for obsessive and shallow chit-chat, these allegations are enough to earn the doctor the first-page cover of the dailies; he is left with nothing more than the disapproval and repugnance of a fickle and voyeuristic audience. Mamet’s text is staged by Luca Barbareschi, that says: «Nowadays things have drastically changed: to speak of good and bad guys is just humour sarcasm. Society claims the sacrifice of everyone’s integrity, without distinctions».
