Gianni Carluccio was born in Milan in 1959.
In 1981 he graduated in Set Design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Milan. He began to work as set and costume designer in 1983.
To his vast experience we include productions such as: Wozzeck by Alban Berg performed for the opening of the new Auditorium Parco della Musica in Rome; Double bill Il Prigioniero and Volo di notte by Luigi Dallapiccola, production that has won the prestigious Premio Abbiati in 2004.
In 2005 Gianni Carluccio made his debut as film set designer for Viaggio segreto directed by Roberto Andò and in 2006 he created set, costume and lighting design for Mozart’s Italian trilogy: Nozze di Figaro, Così fan tutte, Don Giovanni, all three directed by Daniele Abbado. In 2007 he collaborated with director Walter Pagliaro on Trachinie by Sofocle at Teatro greco in Siracusa and in 2008 in collaboration with Roberto Andò he created the installation/performance Proprio come se nulla fosse avvenuto for the first edition of Napoli Theatro Festival. In 2012 he designed The Coast of Utopia by Tom Stoppard, directed by Marco Tullio Giordana.
2013 is the year of his successful collaboration as production designer with Roberto Andò on his film Viva la libertà. 2013 and 2014 begun with a collaboration with the director Marco Bellocchio signing stage and lighting for Uncle Vanja and Pagliacci.
International experiences include the world premiere of Jr. Butterfly by S. Saegusa at the Bunka Kaykan Theater in Tokyo, and Così fan tutte at the Opera House of St. Paul, Minnesota, both with director Daniele Abbado.
He participated in exhibitions and various events, in particular he collaborated on the installation of Peter Greenaway and Robert Wilson in Milan and Lille.
For the season 2015/16 he collaborated with director Daniele Abbado signing set, costumes and lighting design for the new production of Attila (coproduction Teatro comunale di Bologna, Teatro Massimo di Palermo and Teatro La Fenice in Venice). In theatre he designed set costumes and lighting for Minetti (by Thomas Bernhard) collaborating with director Roberto Andò at Teatro Biondo di Palermo and for Il testamento di Maria (Colm Toibin) with director Marco Tulio Giordana at Teatro Stabile di Torino.
In 2016 he started collaborating with director Lukas Hemleb for a new production of Les Huguenots at Theater Kiel.
In 2017 he revived Die Zauberflöte in Sevilla and in Turin, director Roberto Andò, and created the set and lighting for the new production of Andrea Chenier at Teatro dell'Opera di Roma with director Marco Bellocchio.
For the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino 2018 he designed set and lighting for Verdi's La battaglia di Legnano collaborating with director Marco Tullio Giordana. And he is set and lighting designer for Rigoletto, the opening of the Teatro dell'opera di Roma season 2018/19.
Season 2019/20 started at Teatro Massimo di Palermo with the world premiere of Winter Journey, music by Ludovico Einaudi, libretto by Colm Toibin and director is Roberto Andò where Gianni Carluccio created the set and lighting design.
In February 2020 he created the set and lighting design for Il turco in Italia at Teatro la Scala.
During the Covid19 crisis, Teatro Massimo di Palermo asked him to design a new space adaptation for the event Sotto una nuova luce. He also designed set and lighting for Heldenplatz (by Thomas Bernhard) at Teatro di Napoli.
In 2021, for the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino he designed Siberia (music by Umberto Giordano) collaborating with director Roberto Andò and in 2022 at Teatro di Napoli he designed Ferito a morte by Raffaele La Capria.
Furthermore collaborating with director Marco Tullio Giordana he designed the stage for Pa' at Teatro Stabile del Veneto.
He won twice the Premio le Maschere for Best Set Design for Minetti in 2017 and Ferito a Morte in 2023.
